The Benefits of Barefoot Running

Posted by Nicole on 8/31/2010

This is an excellent video about the benefits of barefoot running with footage shot in a lab that shows a comparison between running with shoes and how that affects your feet and a runner without shoes that runs with a forefoot strike. A forefoot strike occurs when the runner lands on the fourth and fifth metatarsal area instead of landing on the heel as you would in traditional running shoes. This is the best way to run for your feet as it takes the stress off your heels, absorbs the impact much better and allows for your feet and legs to remain in motion instead of stopping then starting again after heel impact.

If you are a heel striker, then it is better for your to continue wearing shoes while you run so that they stay protected and the shock is absorbed appropriately. However, barefoot running can add a little extra pep in your step if done correctly. Also, if you have any foot problems such as Plantar Fasciitis, over-pronation, flat feet or any other problems that require special orthotics, devices or shoes, then barefoot running is not for you. This is fascinating information that we just had to share.

Recommended Barefoot Technology Product:

  • Sanuk - shoes that utilize barefoot techology that not only allows your feet to move freely and flex, but also protects them from environmental factors.

As a special precaution, although the video does not address it, be careful when you run barefoot. Sharp objects such as pebbles, rocks or even glass can damage your feet and cause infection. If you do not have a safe area to run in, then it is better to be safe than sorry. We would also recommend that you run barefoot on a treadmill, as this is the safer barefoot running option.

Custom Insoles vs Over-The-Counter Insoles

Posted by Nicole on 8/18/2010 to Foot Pain Relief

When it comes to foot products, there are a lot of options out there. When it comes to insoles, there are still tons of options to choose from. Take, for example, the selection of insoles we have here at Bestinsoles.com. Going through each one individually is enough to make you go crazy. You really have one major decision to make before you start shopping for your insoles - Custom or Over-the-Counter insoles. There are some advantages and disadvantages to choosing both and they are as follows:

Custom Insoles - typically must be prescribed to you by a podiatrist or doctor (there are kits you can purchase online that mold to your foot as well). These can also be quite pricey because they have to be custom made. You will also have to wait for them to be made before you can start enjoying them. On the bright side, custom insoles are going to be an exact fit for your foot.

Over-the-Counter Insoles - are less expensive than custom insoles and can be worn immediately after receiving them. There are plenty to choose from and you can find one that caters to your foot pain needs. You do not need a prescription, nor do you have to pay to see a podiatrist. However, if you do not choose carefully, you could end up with an insole that is not as effective as it could be.

There are pluses and minuses to choosing custom over store bought insoles. It really becomes a decision that you have to make for yourself. You can opt for the in-between option by purchasing a custom insole kit and have insoles created from the molds you take at home. Either way, you should choose the best option for you although if you choose to purchase insoles, we hope that you'll shop with us.

Foot Pain Help

Posted by Nicole on 8/17/2010

Millions of people suffer from a variety of foot ailments, the most common of those being foot soreness or pain. Some of the pain stems from wearing the wrong types of shoes, walking improperly, standing/walking for long periods of time or not having enough support. Whatever the case may be, your foot pain has most likely led to you searching for a solution. Luckily, we have some very viable solutions for you to try in order to get rid of your foot pain:

Home Remedies

There are a ton of home remedies out there that can help get rid of foot pain, temporarily. You can try soaking your feet in various solutions - vinegar (natural healing properties), baking soda, epsom salt. All of these can improve the look and feel of your feet, however, they are temporary solutions to you problem.

Insoles

Insoles can be your best friend when it comes to alleviating foot pain. They come in a variety of styles and offer different bells and whistles. Picking a good insole becomes your responsibility, but it's not a tough decision. Simply determine where your foot hurts and you can find an insole that can help with that specific area of your feet. You can also go general and get a multi-purpose insole that can help with a variety of problems.

Shoes/Custom Orthotics

You can purchase shoes or have custom orthotics made that cater to your specific foot problems. Both of these can be somewhat costly, but worth the money, especially when it comes to having something custom made.

See a Podiatrist

Sometimes speaking to a professional is your best option. If you have access to a podiatrist, we highly recommend speaking to them about your concerns. Some foot problems can be much more serious than a home remedy, insole, shoe, or custom orthotic can help. If you think your foot pain is abnormal, then you should speak with a doctor.

Could Your Flip Flops Be Hurting You?

Posted by Nicole on 8/9/2010 to Foot Pain Relief

Flips flops are fashionable and fit well within most budgets, but could they be hurting your feet? According to an article written by Melissa Heyboer, they certainly are. In fact, flip flops not only cause your feet to hurt, but you could actually be hurting your joints due to improper support. Flips flops are relatively flat and don't offer much support for your arches, toes, heels or ankles. You are actually leaving yourself vulnerable to injuries as well. If you have conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis, you are leaving yoursef open to further damaging your feet.

However, not many people know that they are causing this damage to themselves by wearing flip flops. Actually, you may even believe that you are doing your feet a favor by letting them be free in your open toed shoes, when the reality of it is much different. Flip flops can damage tendons, weaken arches and leave your feet open to injuries such as someone stepping on your toes. These are factors that should be taken into consideration when you decide to wear flip flops, especially if you have had previous foot injuries and foot pain.

However, this is not to say that all flip flops are bad. There are flip flops out there that can be good for your feet. For instance, a flip flop that has arch support, flexes appropriately and has a slight elevation in the heel would be a quality sandal according to the article. Otherwise, you can opt to purchase an orthotic sandal which offers all of these and are typically designed by a podiatrist. Both of these options allow you to wear the sandals you love while taking care of your feet. A great example of these sandals are put out by Spenco called the Spenco Total Support Sandals. They support your feet while still providing the flip flop look you are going for.

You don't have to stop wearing flip flops, you just need to start purchasing the right ones for your feet.

Product Review - CEP Compression Socks

Posted by Nicole on 8/6/2010

As all high level pro athletes know, in order to get faster and stronger You have to workout at super high intensity levels to see real results. Working out at your maximum vo2 level while doing mind numbing efforts is just what we do. Throw in some muscle confusion by doing things that most people can't even imagine is the way to the top of your game. One more rep?

While on a training ride with my teammate, we were climbing up a 12% grade hill about 5 miles long when I came up with a great way to increase the effort. I pulled up along side him and told him to stop pedaling. When he did, I reached over and put my hand on the small of his back and accelerated! We took turns every mile, but think about the extra weight I was now pushing up the hill. He weighs 205, plus his bike so that was an instant increase of almost 225lbs. I was now pushing a combined weight of close to 375lbs. up a hill!! We finished the hill and then continued on for another 80 miles of roller coaster hills.

After a workout like this the two things you need most are proper nutrition and the product no pro athlete lives without today, COMPRESSION FABRIC. I love the compression socks from CEP because they are very comfortable and offer great increases in circulation and blood flow after riding or working out. The special fabrics breathe very well and don't make your legs hot even though they come up almost to the knee. So before you go out and push yourself to new levels of effort make sure to pick up some great socks from CEP. They are also made for running in so all you marathon runners they are for you to.

Yaktrax - Winter is Coming!!!

Posted by Nicole on 8/3/2010
Winter is quickly approaching and it is important to be prepared. There are products out there that can help. For instance, under our Winter Products section on Bestinsoles.com, you will find some great winter products including hand warmers, feet warmers, insoles and ice cleats. One product I want to call your attention to are the two Yaktrax products we have listed.

Yaktrax Walker

Yaktrax Walker Traction Cleats Yaktrax Walker Traction Cleats features an easy to slip on and slip off design that makes wearing ice cleats simple. Simply remove the cleats from the package and slip right over your shoes. The rubber design makes them easy to take off and slip right into your purse, pocket or bag. The Yaktrax Walker will keep your feet steady on the ground when ice makes it difficult to get around. These ice cleats are perfect for the elderly and anyone who needs more traction.

Yaktrax Pro

Yaktrax Pro Traction Cleats Yaktrax Pro Traction Cleats are designed the exact same as the Yaktrax walker with one difference - the strap. The Pro traction cleats will slide onto your shoes and slide off just as easily, but the addition of the strap allows users to keep the yaktrax from slipping off while tredging through thicker snow and ice. You will have the same traction abilities as the Walker version except you will be able to do a little more with the Pro model.

Both of these products are great, but deciding which one you will purchase should be based on your needs. If you are going to be trecking through some serious snow or heavy trails, then you should opt for the Yaktrax Pro. If you are simply using these to prevent falling on ice while walking to your car or completing everyday tasks, then the Yaktrax Walker is going to be more your style. Yaktrax is a great way to prepare yourself for winter as well as prevent slip and falls due to icy streets, sidewalks and other surfaces.
